A Taoist Perspective
Taoism
speaks about the Way as an experience pattern. Therefore, discussions on Taoism
do not usually include things outside of the Way (the experience pattern) like
strange events, super powers, or miracles. In
human society, we gradually establish a common agreement which are called law,
morality, and rule. An individual who follows this common agreement tries to live
in harmony with others. To not violate this common agreement is an important thing.
This
common agreement, in Taoist's termiology, is called the Way of Human Being. This
way has its limitations and biases. Thus, it needs constantly be checked and corrected.
The Way of Earth provides for a higher level of standard for the Way of Human
Being to model itself after. Yet,
the Way of Earth may have mistakes which are caused through the angle of observation,
and geographical differences. So, the Way of Heaven is the remedy for the Way
of Earth to correct itself. When
the observer can step back and see things from this larger perspective, he will
gradually knows the smallness of himself. The smallest thing is closest thing
to emptiness. When one becomes enlightened with the essence of emptiness, he then
understands the Tao. "Tao
Teh Chin" In
1987, Shifi Hwang first made his translation of the "Tao Teh Chin" available
to the public.
