Herbs & Remedies

Why are herbs important?

Herbs help our health in three ways:

  • Preventative: When we sense a cold or flu coming on, we can take herbs in advance of full onset. Herbs give our bodies more power to ward off any contagion, even serious ones such as parotitis (mumps), meningitis, encephalitis and hepatitis. Heat stroke can also be prevented if treated early enough with herbs.
  • Curative: When someone is already suffering from an ailment, and the body is in disharmony, taking herbs can help relieve the misery. Some examples are high blood pressure, constipation, acne, toothache, indigestion, nervous disorders, frost bite, dysmenorrhea, phlegm and hang-overs.
  • Tonic: Herbs give us more energy for our body and mind functions so we don't tire as easily. Specific organs of the body like the liver, heart and kidneys can be nourished and energized with herbs.

Many herbs grow up in a wild state which contains magnificent energy. Herbs generate more energy than meat and vegetables. Unfortunately our farmers are not interested in nurturing them because they grow slowly. However, in order to get a sufficient energy, we need to use herbs daily.

The Hwang Family's Herbal Tradition

Much of Shifu Hwang's herbal knowledge has been handed down to him through a long line of family tradition. Herbal practice was his family's business.

In the county of Chan Sar of Hunan Province, the Hwang family owns several large Chinese Herb shops, still in existence today. His ancestors owned a reading room called the 'Love Stone Reading Room" which contained many herbal formulas of lore.

Motivated by progress in his martial art training, Shifu Hwang always asked his instructors to teach him their special herbal formulas. In doing this, he learned several formulas which build and maintain strong energy, as well as formulas to help speed recovery of bone, ligaments, and muscles injuries.

When he was in his thirties, he became interested in Taoism and Tantric practices. From time to time he consulted the Taoism and Tantric scriptures where he found many valuable formulas. Although, there are thousands of Chinese Herb Formulas which are usually taught in TCM school, the TaiChi People formulas are not included in TCM's knowledge.

If we could summarize the focus of TaiChi People's herbals formulas, it would be to help those who are devoted to being martial artists.
